Is there room?

Is there room?

…Let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.

For the last couple years I have been journeying towards living a more simplistic life. It started with me selling my three bedroom house and most recently, taking part in a 31 day minimalist challenge. Essentially, the challenge was to get rid of the number of items that coincide with the date. August 1, one thing. August 2, two things, etc. It started off easy but as you can imagine, became challenging after day 20 or so. I was encouraged though as I am growing to believe that having too much space or too many things can be distracting, disruptive and even sometime wasteful. For example, being single, having a 3 bedroom house, with a loft, with 3 bathrooms, with a full yard was excessive….to me. There were rooms I didn’t go in, bathrooms not used, yard I had to pay someone to cut. (Sidenote: Did you know that even if you never used a bathroom, you still needed to clean the toilet? How annoying is that?) Even with my clothes and various possessions, some items still had tags on them, some needed repairs, some items weren’t used or worn in months, even years. Just excess stuff…causing more clutter… See, my goal in downsizing and living more simplistically is not to make room for new things, it’s to make room and have clarity within myself.

It is assumed that the average person makes over 35,000 decisions a day. Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg and even President Barack Obama promoted minimalistic attire in order to pare down the numbers of decisions to be made in a day. Research shows that the simple act of making decisions degrades one’s ability to make further decisions. This further supports my goal that reductions make room and saves capacity for other things. The more stuff we have around us, the more we fill our schedules, the more we cloud our mind…the less time and energy we have. This is why sometimes, it’s hard for us to hear from God….

  • We have too much clutter…
  • There is not room for God….

How can we expect to hear from God when we don’t have room for Him…

How can we have room for God when we fill our schedules with everything else…

The key scripture is showing us that there are some things we need to let go of. Some weight, some sin…some baggage! Unfortunately, sometimes the things we need to let go of are not inherently bad, which can make decisions difficult. Like my house, like random possessions …nice things.. but just in the way. Even time…these days our schedules are so busy…running from work, to happy hour, to more work, to birthday parties, to meetings, traveling, etc. None of these are inherently bad…but are they distractions? Are they in the way of what God is trying to tell you, trying to show you, trying to move you???

In order to get to your purpose, you have to let go of some stuff! (Don’t be a bag lady (person))

Bag lady, you gon’ miss your bus, you can’t hurry up, you have too much stuff…Bag lady, you gon’ hurt your back, carrying all those bags like that…

My challenge to you is to declutter your life so that you can be free and have capacity to fulfill your purpose.

  • What do you need to remove from your schedule
  • Who do you need to let go of
  • How can you be more selfish with your time

All so you can spend more time with God. So you can make room to hear from God.

Listen – God is not always going to disrupt your life to get your attention. Especially if you continue to ignore Him. He wants you to invite Him in. He wants you to make a conscious decision to have a relationship with Him. God wants you to want Him…God wants you to MAKE room, not give Him what’s left.

Stop giving God left overs and expecting Him to show up with a full course meal…
